Hi, I'm Nico! I'm a contributor to Viajera en Tailandia. One of my many "concerns" when it comes to traveling and exploring new horizons is the attitude toward and acceptance of sexual diversity at my destination.
And in the East, where LGBTIQ+ rights and freedoms are virtually nonexistent, finding destinations that are welcoming and respectful of everyone’s sexual identity and orientation is essential. Amid the work that the LGBTIQ+ community must undertake across Asia, Thailand has emerged as a haven for those seeking an inclusive and open travel experience.
Now let me tell you about some of the things I discovered that make Thailand a destination worth visiting and celebrating for its LGBTQ+-friendly policies.
LGBT Thailand: A Different Side of Southeast Asia
We’ll never tire of talking about Thailand on this blog—we just love it! Thanks to its crystal-clear beaches, majestic temples, rich cultural heritage, and wide range of sustainable travel options, it has also earned a well-deserved reputation as an LGBTIQ+-friendly destination.
Sexual diversity is celebrated throughout the country, and LGBTIQ+ travelers can expect to feel welcome and respected during their stay in Thailand.
The fight for LGBTIQ+ rights in Thailand has a history dating back several decades. In 1956, Thailand became one of the first countries in Asia to repeal laws criminalizing homosexuality. This was a significant step toward acceptance and equality.
In recent years, the LGBTIQ+ movement in Thailand has gained significant momentum. In 2015, Thailand introduced a draft gender equality bill that addressed issues such as marriage equality and gender identity. This bill marked an important step toward equal rights.
Today, Thailand continues to make significant strides toward equality. This includes the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2019, which allows LGBTIQ+ couples to marry legally.

Freedom of expression and tolerance
One of the most notable aspects of Thailand is its tolerance and respect for sexual diversity. Unlike many other destinations around the world, LGBTIQ+ travelers here don’t have to worry about hiding their identity or sexual orientation. The local community and the Thai government have worked together to create an environment where freedom of expression and equality are fundamental.
Bangkok: The Heart of Thailand's LGBT Community
Bangkok is the heart of Thailand’s LGBT scene. The city is home to a wide array of LGBTIQ+-friendly bars, clubs, and restaurants, where travelers can enjoy the nightlife and mingle with locals and other visitors. In addition, every year, Bangkok hosts its own pride parade, “Bangkok Pride,” which attracts thousands of people from around the world.
If you're looking for an unforgettable experience in Bangkok's vibrant LGBTIQ+ scene, look no further than Silom Soi 2 and Silom Soi 4, two streets that are the beating heart of the city's LGBTIQ+ nightlife. Silom Soi 2 is perfect for those who want to dance until dawn at exciting nightclubs.
On the other hand, Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and pubs where you can enjoy a drink in a cozy and peaceful setting. Getting here is easy thanks to its proximity to the Silom subway station and the Sala Daeng BTS Skytrain station.
Hey! Joha and I put together this guide to Bangkok’s public transportation so you can fully enjoy the city’s nightlife.
The “third gender”: ladyboys and kathoeys
One of the most fascinating and distinctive aspects of sexual diversity in Thailand is the tradition of the “third gender,” which includes the famous ladyboys and kathoeys. This unique community has played a significant role in Thai culture and is a testament to the country’s openness and acceptance of gender identity.
Who are the kathoeys?
Kathoeys are individuals who may identify as women, men, or simply as gender-fluid. Kathoeys often choose to undergo gender transition or adopt gender characteristics that do not conform to traditional binary norms.
Although transgender and gender-fluid people face challenges in many parts of the world, in Thailand, kathoeys are widely accepted and respected. Many find opportunities in acting, entertainment, and the beauty industry, and have come to be regarded as icons of the LGBTIQ+ community in the country.
Let's talk about ladyboys in Thailand
The ladyboy community in Thailand, on the other hand, is known for its unique beauty and style. These transgender women are experts in makeup, fashion, and entertainment, and often work in the entertainment industry. At events such as the Miss Tiffany’s Universe national beauty pageant, ladyboys compete with grace and elegance, and the pageant is a celebration of diversity and beauty in all its forms.

Drag Queens and Miss Universe Thailand: the “national sport” where glamour and talent reign supreme
As we’ve seen, one of the most striking aspects of diversity in Thailand is the passion its people have for pageants and beauty contests. On the one hand, drag shows are a major part of Thailand’s nightlife. Talented performers come together to put on stunning shows that combine music, dance, and dazzling costumes.
And in a more competitive arena, Thailand also stands out in the beauty pageant industry, with Miss Universe Thailand being one of the country’s most prestigious events. What makes this pageant particularly significant is that transgender women also have the opportunity to compete in their own pageant, Miss International Queen.
