The Essentials

Explore a community in northern Thailand by bike and get an up-close look at local life, crafts, and heritage. Over the course of five hours, you’ll visit a clay brick workshop, a woodcarving studio, and a Lanna Buddhist temple, accompanied by Chris and members of the community. The tour ends at Na Laem Nuea Clay House, where you’ll learn about the art of bamboo weaving and the traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations.

When you arrive at Na Laem Nuea Clay House, Chris and the local artisans will welcome you with a drink while they tell you about the village’s history, its origins, and the traditions that are still part of everyday life there.

Then you'll hop on a bike to explore the community and get an up-close look at its crafts and special places. You'll visit a clay brick workshop, a woodcarving studio, and a Lanna Buddhist temple, where you'll take part in a private ceremony with a monk.

Back at Clay House, you’ll enjoy a local lunch and wrap up the day by learning about bamboo weaving alongside the artisans, discovering the traditional techniques that keep this craft alive.

About the host

Chris was born in Phrae and has always felt a deep sense of belonging to Na Laem Nuea, a community where craftsmanship is an integral part of its history and daily life. After living in Bangkok for more than 30 years and working in tourism, she returned to her hometown with the intention of reviving and keeping this heritage alive.

Inspired by this, upon her return she opened Na Laem Nuea Clay House, a living museum where bamboo, clay, and wood tell part of the community’s story. Chris leads this project alongside artisans and elders from the village, who preserve the knowledge and techniques passed down through generations.

Today, her experience in tourism comes together with the experience of the artisans to welcome visitors from around the world and share the stories, skills, and traditions that continue to shape Na Laem Nuea.

Why have this experience in Phrae?

In Phrae Province, in northern Thailand, Na Laem Nuea is a small community where bamboo is an integral part of daily life and traditional craftsmanship. For generations, its residents have worked with this material to create useful, everyday objects, including the “khub lorn,” the traditional bamboo hat associated with the lives of northern farmers. Here, this knowledge continues to be passed down from one generation to the next.

It is in this community that Na Laem Nuea Clay House is located—a space created to preserve and share this heritage. The tour is part of a leisurely experience through the community, with several stops to visit workshops, artisans, and points of interest. It is not a technical tour.
