Traveling through a country exposes us to new situations and challenges that we can’t afford to overlook, which is why researching your destination is the best way to avoid setbacks while traveling. That’s why I want to share with you 5 mistakes you should NOT make if you’re traveling in Thailand; these are based on my own experiences and those of others that have cost us time, money, and ruined our days. Want to know what they are? Here they are:
1. Renting a motorcycle or car for your trip to Thailand WITHOUT insurance, experience, or an international driver's license
Using a motorcycle or car is very convenient in many cities because distances are long, and it saves you waiting time and money on transportation. Plus, it gives you the flexibility to get around as you please. However, on your trip through Thailand, you’ll needto have driving experience, an international driver’s license , and purchase insurance offered by rental agencies.
Also, keep in mind that in Thailand, most cars have the steering wheel on the right side, drivers stay in the left lane (unlike in Latin American countries), and traffic signs are in Thai.
2. Support tourism activities that promote the exploitation of animals
During your trip to Thailand, please do not support these activities, because even though they may seem harmless, they can cause a great deal of harm. Shows featuring trained animals such as monkeys, elephants, tigers, and snakes involve inappropriate practices, such as the use of chains, small cages, medication, and other techniques that harm the animals’ well-being.
Avoid tourist activities that involve riding elephants; before choosing an elephant sanctuary, make sure it is responsible and follows good animal care practices. @cris.elefantasia on Instagram provides information on how to identify a “real sanctuary.” She’s also created a list of recommended sanctuaries to visit if you’re traveling in Thailand.
3. Wanting to visit many destinations in a short amount of time during your trip to Thailand
Thailand offers a wide variety of destinations with so many must-see attractions that it’s hard to choose, but I recommend spending at least 3 or 4 days in cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, or Phuket.
Keep in mind that if you spend only a few days in each place, you’ll have to rush to see the main attractions and won’t have enough time to explore and immerse yourself in the essence of each destination. Plus, you’ll end up spending more on transportation and lodging.
I recommend planning your itinerary with enough time at each destination or traveling with Viajera en Tailandia. I’m ready to help you plan a trip to Thailand with the most convenient itinerary, tailored just for you.
4. Book hotels outside the preferred area
The strategic location of your hotels will be key during your trip to Thailand. Keep in mind that the best hotel is one that’s close to the places you’ll be visiting and to public transportation, making it easier and more affordable to get around.
Also, check the area around the hotel to make sure it’s safe and close to amenities such as restaurants, shops, and shopping centers. This will ensure your comfort and provide you with options to meet your basic needs.
5. Not checking the weather and specific conditions of each city you plan to visit
Understanding the climate and specific conditions of each city you plan to visit is key to planning a trip to Thailand. The seasons in Thailand are as follows:
- Winter: cold (November through February)
- Summer: hot (March through May)
- Monsoon season: rainy season (June through October).
Keep in mind that humidity levels are high and remain constant throughout the year.
On the other hand, some activities may be restricted or not recommended during certain times of the year due to rain, water levels, or adverse weather conditions.
Therefore, the best way to be well prepared is to check the weather conditions in advance and pack only what is necessary based on the climate and conditions of the places you plan to visit.
